The practice of regulating the sale of firearms was effective for a very long time, so why the change in policy? The practice of a complete assault weapons ban was issued with the directive of societal protection from criminals who sought to harm the public. Let's look at the facts. When the ban was first put into place in California people were afraid of attacks. Mexico, however already had similar bans and their society had begun what seemed to be a downward spiral created by organized crime. People in Mexico were afraid. Did our government completely overlook the fact that weapons bans in Mexico had created fear in the law abiding citizens who no longer carried the banned weaponry?
